I’m back with a ‘Meet the Characters’ post and this week it’s Holly from my new novel, ‘The Year of Starting Over‘ which is released on Thursday! It’s set in sunny Spain, where I now live. Just look at the gorgeous cover.

Here’s the blurb

What if – to find yourself – you had to run away?

Last year was meant to be when Holly got her happy-ever-after. But stuck in a job that’s going nowhere, and a relationship that feels more like it’s going backwards… this year Holly has decided it’s time to change her life. She just has to:

– End the relationship with the commitment-phobic boyfriend
– Go on a proper adventure
– Learn to be herself again
– Definitely, categorically not fall in love.

Cramming her belongings into her little yellow Mini, Holly drives on to a ferry bound to Spain, to stay at a remote farmhouse near a beautiful village in the Andalusian hills.

But the day she arrives she nearly crashes her car into a gorgeous guy on a motorbike. He’s called Matias and their paths keep crossing, much to Holly’s irritation. Because as she learns to speak Spanish from the locals, finally starts laying out plans for her own design business, and sips sangria in the sunlit village square, Holly is beginning to remember who she is and what she wants.

So she won’t allow herself be distracted by Matias. Because this year – for Holly – there are more important things in life than love. And she won’t let yet another bad relationship ruin everything… will she?

A moving and uplifting romantic comedy about living each moment and learning to trust yourself again, for fans of Jenny Hale, Debbie Macomber, and Sophie Kinsella.

Now let’s move onto our interview with Holly.

Hi Holly, thanks for dropping by to talk to us. I know you were really fond of your grandparents. How did you feel when you discovered that they’d left you some money to enable you to make a fresh start and follow your dreams?

I was amazed and really touched! It didn’t expect it at all. It was so kind of them and I was determined to do what Pops wanted and take a year out to do what I wanted with my life.

How did you decide on your ‘dream list’?

It was Suzy’s idea to make a list of things I wanted to do, I thought of lots of stuff but then whittled it down to the ones that meant the most to me. I really wanted to get over my fear of heights, and turn my designs into a full-time business, but I wanted to do some fun things too such as learning to dance and try fifty flavours of ice cream.

It was very brave of you to pack all your possessions into the back of your mini and catch the ferry over to Spain. Did you ever have second thoughts or feel nervous about your decision?

Gosh yes! But the  break up with Scott really hit me hard and I was determined to make a fresh start with my life. So when Fiona and Pablo offered me the chance to stay with them for a few months I grabbed it.

One of the things on your ‘dream list’ was to get over your fear of heights. How did you feel when you discovered that Fiona and Pablo’s finca was high up a mountain?

Terrified! Talk about being thrown in the deep end.

Apart from driving up and down the mountain, what did you find the most difficult thing about living in Spain?

To be honest it wasn’t difficult to adjust at all. I loved Fiona and Pablo’s finca, the Spanish countryside and people. I guess the hardest things to get used to were the language, I only knew a little Spanish, and to remember not drink the tap water. Fiona and Pablo get their water from a well and it isn’t drinkable. So I had to remember to use bottled water when I wanted a drink, or to wash salad, vegetables and fruit.

What did you like most about living in Spain?

Oh gosh, where do I start? The sun, the countryside, the pool, the beaches, the people. It’s such a completely different way of life.

And what about Matias? Where does he fit in with your plans?

He doesn’t fit in with them at all. This year is for me, strictly no relationship. I don’t want a man getting in the way of me achieving my dreams. He is quite a hunk though…
