Writing Tips

Here are some of my top writing tips. If you’ve any that you’d like to share email them to me and I’ll add them to this page!

Write something every day. It doesn’t matter what about or how long it is. Just write. The more you write the more your ideas will flow.

Always keep a notebook and pen handy to write down any ideas you get. Names, titles, snippets of conversation can all start off an idea.

The more you think about writing the harder it is to write.

Read a lot. It’s the best research you can do.

Don’t be scared to try something different.

Write with your own voice, in your own style. That is what makes you unique.

Writing Tuition

I have a BA (Open) degree, a Certificate in Education, a HNC in Media and many years of experience as a writing tutor. I was a part time lecturer on the MA in Professional Writing course and the BA Illustration course at Falmouth University, where I also ran Summer Schools on writing for the children’s market.

I have tutored online for the TrAce Online Writing School, and via correspondence for the Open College of Arts. I now tutor for the London School of Journalism and the Writer’s Bureau (I wrote several modules of their ‘Writing for Children’ course and their ‘Write for Profit Using the Internet’ course). I also wrote a study guide for the ICS ‘Writing for Children’ course.

I’m happy to give talks to writing groups and offer private writing tuition, mentoring or manuscript appraisal.
